What Happened To Domino’s In Northern Europe?

Iceland is a notoriously hard market for international fast-food chains to break into. Domino’s is the exception - the pizza chain has the biggest market share in fast food there. But that love for Domino’s doesn’t extend to the rest of the Nordic bloc. In October 2019, Domino’s Pizza Group, which owns stores in Iceland, Norway and Sweden, announced it’s exiting its business in those markets.

I moved from the UK to Sweden two years after Domino's popped up in Sweden. I'd used them before in the UK, and there was one in the centre of the Swedish city I now lived in. So I decide to order online one day and… what? They don't deliver to my house? But it's only 25 minutes away *by foot* from their store! Why even should I care about Domino's then, there's an actually local pizzeria just a 5 minute walk away. And Domino's are significantly more expensive…
    Not shocked they are unprofitable.

stora manager in a dominos in iceland here:
look the main reason why dominos in iceland works so well is because of a few reasons
nr.1 they were the first ones here to offer a free delivery and because of that everyone got used to just havig dominos.
nr.2 domonis is making everything they possibly can to make it as easy as possible for customers to get their pizza. for example havig an app to order, pay with the app and when you get there you press a button that tells the staff you have arrived and if the pizza is ready they will just give it to you! they allso have a 50% off if you order online every now and then to get you to do it to see how simple it is.
nr.3 the staff is mostly young people (15-25) and then they can pay them a bit less.
nr.4 customers are allways treated like gods, if the pizza isn’t perfect we give them a discount or a new pizza or a credit of the price of the order.
nr.5 people in iceland are lazy and just want a pizza to their house.
bonus reason, they dough and toppings are allways fresh and well prepared, everyone who has had fast food in iceland likes it the best of all other countries because of it’s freshness and simpleness :)

Domino's needs to massively rethink their brand in Copenhagen in order to compete. Copenhagen is a dense city with food options everywhere. I have 3 pizza take away options by walking 5 minutes from my apartment (all better quality than Domino's btw). Domino's is often located obscure places - probably to keep rent down. So the american model is to keep cost down and rely on delivery, but most people don't get their food delivered. It often takes too long.

Then there is the quality of the pizza. I tried it once and it tastes like a frozen pizza. Apparently, the staff was instructed to ignored expiration dates and skimp on cleaning in order to keep cost down.

But Danes are not that concerned about the price if the product is crap. The most popular food option in Denmark is to go a café and order a burger, which cost 2 or 3 times the cost of a Big Mac. Even McDonald's acknowledged this and started creating more high end food options as well as vegan food.

So essentially, I believe that in order for Domino's to work in Copenhagen, you need to move closer to the dense populated areas, make better pizzas and then you can probably sell them for twice as much.

In Iceland everything is so overpriced, that is the reason for it success. So people just go for something that is a little bit less expensive.Even though it means less quality. Because the quality Pizzeria's are so expensive, That is why Icelanders go for Dominos, Even though they are super pricey. Cost just as much as a decent steak.... Yeah I know, crazy. Everywhere else in the world Dominos is food for people that don't have much money.

    Edit:
Also after watching the video, I heard that they talk about that the sales has plummeted now in 2019. They blame macro market and tourism. But what they don't realise is that something happened to Domino's here in Iceland. The pizza's used to full fill a certain quality. You could always expect ,when you would buy a pizza from them how it would taste like. Like it is when you are buying food from such a big brand, it needs to full fill basic standards that is attached to it's name. Sadly that is no longer the case, you cannot rely longer on that minimum standard. The pizza's from Domino's here in Iceland taste quite terrible, salty and strange. It is like there is no quality control anymore. That is probably the reason for it's decline in sales. The executive needs to be notified to help building their growth again.

When dominos appeared in sweden everyone was hyped, just as hyped as with KFC. When it opened we all went there mostly because of the hype but after tasting dominoes pizza it just doesnt compare to our original swedish pizzas. American pizzas tastes like our store bought freezed pizzas and we only by them on emergencys since its not very healthy or tasty. And not just that, dominoes pizzas cost almost the double of what we pay for a regular swedish pizza the same size.

The pizza culture is really strong in the nordics but its nothing like chain pizza. Even if pizza franchises does exist its familj owned and like 5-10 locations based inside larger citys.
I think the answer is so much more simple then you make it out to be. Dominos was way to late to go to Sweden in 2018 when big companys like uber eats and foodora already has an insane marketshare. The only thing dominos has that they lack is basicly campaign offers and thats not enough to try and change what kind of pizza swedes like (Swedish pizza is not as thick as regular dominos pizza and the condiments are quite different.
